General Information To Know Regarding Cavachons

By Kristen Baird

Numerous breeds of dogs exist and not all are considered to be purebred. In fact, a great number of these animals are created by putting together two different breeds of dog. Cavachons are a product of this practice. Referred to as designer dogs, these animals are the mixing of the Bichon Frise and Cavalier King Charles.

People interested in owning one of these animals as a pet is encouraged to do research to learn about them. This type of dog is the result of two different breeds, therefore there is no true standard for them. Every dog will have some of its own unique traits. Still, there are some basic guidelines to expect when getting one of these dogs.

They are small in size, which may be desired by those living in small houses or apartments. As fully grown dogs, they reach only to about 12 to 13 inches tall on average. Generally their coat is soft and silky with waves. It might be entirely white, white mixed with apricot, or white with tan and black markings.

This kind of dog is known for its accepting, tolerant and gentle nature. It would make for a great pet, especially for families or those who have other animals in the household. Typically the Cavachon dog is energetic, but not hyperactive. They do well with moderate daily exercise that keeps them healthy, in good shape and stimulated. Playing catch, going on a walk or other activities serve as a great energy release for them.

For the most part, these animals are considered loving pets. They make great companions and love attention, especially at a young age. The dogs should be handled with care when they are still puppies because of their small size.

As puppies, they are smart and quick to learn. This is helpful when it comes to the process of training. Pet owners are encouraged to be consistent with their training to ensure the puppy understands what is expected. The Cavachon dog learns best when training is administered early on. Obedience training and socialization should start at a young age, if possible. This will help ensure better results.

These dogs may have a lot of hair but are not expected to shed that much. Similar to other designer dogs, owners or breeders might suggest that these animals are hypoallergenic, meaning they create less of a response in those allergic to dander. Despite the lack of shedding, the animals will require some level of grooming. This is important to keep the coat from looking dirty or matted. Sometimes a trim is necessary. Grooming may be carried out by pet owners or professionals.

Health concerns for these dogs are similar to those for other small breeds. They are more prone to ear infections because of the hair growing within the ears. To prevent this problem, owners are encouraged to regularly clean out the ears and watch for signs of infection. Other potential health conditions to look out for: eye ulcerations caused by hair rubbing the corneas, flea allergies and heart murmurs. It is important to find a healthy dog from a trustworthy breeder.
