How To Find A Reputable Labrador Retriever Breeder

By Virginia Parker

Finding a reputable dog breeder does not need to be a challenge. With a few simple guidelines, it can be very easy, and can help potential owners to avoid some of the problems they are likely to encounter if they do not do careful research in their Labrador retriever breeder.

A reputable and responsible dog breeder is someone who cares about having quality puppies. They generally treat their breeding animals as family pets and do not cage them. They breed their dog or dogs because they want to bring out the best of them, and are not concerned with quantity. A very important thing to consider is seeing both parents and viewing where the animals live and have been raised.

Ask a potential breeder about the background and lineage of their breeding stock. Ask questions, and feel good about the answers provided. There should be openness and honesty, and the owners should be proud to provide endless information about their stock. Don't feel bad asking a lot of questions; purebred dogs are expensive and buyers should expect to get quality for their money.

Don't expect puppies to be available immediately. Most retriever breeders do not produce a litter until they know that all of the puppies will have homes. People who advertise that they are selling purebred dogs often are only concerned with making money. Responsible ones will also require potential buyers to complete an application and may want to view the home that their puppy will be going to.

Any good breeder has a very good relationship with their veterinarian. They also ensure that the parents and puppies are always up to date with their vaccinations. Records should be available for potential owners to see and any remaining vaccinations or treatment should be explained. If veterinary care cannot be confirmed, or has not happened, it should be considered a red flag.

Dogs bred in puppy mills should always be avoided. These type of breeders do not care about anything but making money. The dogs are often kept in cramped cages and they are bred constantly, which can be crippling to their health and compromises the health of the puppies that they are producing as well. It is likely less expensive to acquire a puppy from a mill, and this is not only because of the conditions they are raised in, but also because they do not often receive any type of veterinary care or vaccinations either.

Taking the time to do careful research is worth it. Getting to know your retriever breeder, and to know that they care about the animals they are selling, can be the difference between getting a healthy, quality dog as opposed to one that could have the potential to have lots of health problems because of irresponsible breeding.

Finding a good retriever breeder might require a bit of work. There are lots of things to consider and patience is sometimes required if puppies are not immediately available. In the long run, careful research can pay off with a pet who will be a part of the family for many years.
