By Geraldine Dimarco

Everybody has their best friend. Some of our best friends though have their own best friends-the four legged kind. If you have a friend who loves his pet I know what gift he will appreciate-a basket of the yummiest gourmet dog cookies. It is a thoughtful and unique present he and his pet will love. Find out more about these special homemade dog treats in this article.

There really is nothing that says I love you better than something that is made from the heart. Sure it takes some of your time and effort to plan them but really-when you hear that happy bark or see the appreciation in your friend's eyes, you will know that it is truly worth it. It doesn't hurt that you can also save a few dollars from doing it right in your own kitchen as well.

Now, what can we do to make that gift basket a sight to behold? As any gift giving expert will tell you, it's all about the presentation. How about stacking the cookie and tying it in a pretty ribbon, nestled in a beautifully decorated wicker basket. Remember, it may be homemade but nobody has to know that. Think out of the box and give your creativity free reign.

Naturally, even if you have the prettiest bag of goodies-the recipient will still know the quality of the gift when they open it. Make sure that the cookies you make are of the best kind. You can find some great canine treats for free in the internet. You will need to know what are the toxic ingredients are for dogs so you can keep away from them. Examples of these are macadamia nuts, caffeine, onions, raisins, and chocolates.

I know what you're thinking-no chocolates does not a gourmet treat make. This may be for humans but our dogs will not know any better. There are many options that are guaranteed to satisfy your pet. Drop a spoonful of peanut butter on the biscuit; or sprinkle some grated cheese over it. You can also chop up dried pieces of apple (without the seeds), mix it with a little cinnamon and serve it to the animal.

The only problem you might have is keeping your human friends away from the yummy creations you are making. Most gourmet dog cookies are actually edible and good for the human palate. You can try finding some regular recipes we ourselves use online but again, be very careful on the ingredients that you put inside. It should be safe for canine consumption.

Last of all, if you really want to put that extra special quality in your cookies-make it look as doggie-cute as possible. There are cookie molds shaped like paw prints and doggie bones. Use it to cut up the cookies. It will surely bring a smile to the pet owner you are planning to give it to.

Try it out today! Homemade dog treats are excellent gifts to give not just to your good friend-but to his beloved dog as well. Get to work and make some people and their canine pets happy when you do.
