Fun Ways to Play with Your Dog

By Allyson Westcot

There are several different activities and sorts of play you can enjoy with your dog, each offering different benefits for both you and your pet. Rather than just strolling round the block or down the street to discover a potty spot, for example, change up your walk by going to a different place every day or walking somewhere that allows for more playtime when you reach the destination.

You've potentially seen the competitions on TV where dogs navigate obstruction courses to win a race. Many dogs love these types of challenges and find them high playtime. Ask your vet or local dog clinic if there are any courses in your neighborhood. By signing your dog up to learn to do agility courses, you'll also get some exercise running alongside your pup and offering encouragement.

Fetch play is an old stand-by and a good choice for that reason. Be certain that you use something soft and light like a tennis ball or a soft disk toy like one from EzyDog. Objects that are heavy or hard can injure your dog's teeth or mouth. Throw low to the ground so your dog doesn't need to jump high and take a chance on hurting himself on the landing.

If your dog loves to swim and can do so comfortably, then swimming could be a great, fun playtime for both of you. There are some breeds that will barely swim and others that don't take well to it. But if your dog enjoys it, purchase a dog life vest that fits your puppy to make it easier and safer, and luxuriate in this great exercise together.

Do not forget to rest regularly if it's hot outside. Offer clean water regularly so your dog does not get dehydrated. Keep things safe and reasonable, and you're both sure to have a great time.
