Working With The Best German Shepherd Breeders

By Brandi Little

Also known as the Alsatian, the german shepherd is a huge dog originally bred in Germany. Originally trained to protect and herd sheep, its ability to be trained has made it a favorite for police and military work. The best german shepherd breeders will deliver dogs that respond very well to obedience training.

The presence of breeding enthusiasts from different parts of the country led to wide variations within the species. Despite the variations, all breeders strove to produce dogs remarkably adapted to performing tasks in their working environment. A body formed to promote a single subspecies was quickly abandoned due to lack of consensus on the traits to emphasize. To date, private breeders are largely unregulated and breed diversity has persisted.

The pure bred german shepherds have black noses on a long muzzle with large erect years. They have a graceful gait, with neck lowered when prowling forward and raised erect when excited. Over the years, uncontrolled breeding has resulted into large variations of the coat color. The trademark bushy tail has persisted all along and some shades of black are almost always present.

Some genetic ailments have also set in, with spinal deformities a common sight. A keen observer may notice dogs with deformed hips in a dog show. The size and location of their ears makes them prone to ear infections since they meet oncoming dirt head on. Von Willebrand disease is a common bleeding disorder that has been known to be hereditary.

Alsatians have a very keen sense of smell coupled with ability to work amidst all kinds of distractions. In the battlefields, many soldiers have trusted dogs to uncover traps and landmines buried in their lines of march. They have also been used successfully to guide the blind due to their alert and protective nature in the midst of dangerous confrontation. However, Labradors and golden retrievers are more widely used as lead dogs.

Females need to be screened for any medical threats before being presented to studs for mating. Both animals must have their lineages traced to ascertain their compatibility so that chances of a good litter are increased. For medical attention, only trust a local vet as they will be within reach in case of complications during the gestation period.

Many breeders offer studding services for profit making purposes, so it is necessary to seek some contacts firsthand. Many breeders have very strict policies on outside studding and may often insist on assessing your female in person. You should ask around about breeders with studs you are interested in before making a business call. The next step will consolidating you dog titles and vet records.

Though monetary payments are the most straightforward means of payment, some of the best german shepherd breeders prefer getting a puppy from the resulting offspring. In most cases your female must be transported to their place of work for the mating exercise. To eliminate chances of stress build up during the gestation period, your female must be brought back to her normal surroundings after the mating period. Throughout the period of carrying the pregnancy, the vet should be consulted on a regular basis to perform routine check.
