Dumbo Rat Care - Tips For Selecting The Best Cage

By Tom Parker

A cage is quite literally just a closed off place that contains your pet rat. In order to make it a home, you will need to make it cozy, inviting, and stimulating for him.

A rat needs his private area of rest just as much as we do. Nest boxes in pet shops have a wide variety of designs you can choose from. You can also create your own using a hard cardboard box, a plastic box with a hole, an upside down bowl with an opening, or a pipe...just to name a few options. Be creative.

Within the cage and nest box, make sure that your rat has plenty of bedding material to use as padding. You'll want to avoid using pine or cedar materials, which can be harmful to your little guys. Instead, look to use shredded papers, fabrics, or other types of shaved wood.

You must also change your pet rat's nesting material regularly as these can smell of urine and can cause infection or harm to your pet rat if left unchanged.

You'll also want to provide your dumbo rat with a plastic wheel on which to exercise. Metal wheels may be a bit painful for their soft feet, so plastic is the way to go. By giving your rats a way to exercise within the confines of their cage, you'll help keep them happy and healthy!

A fun item to place into your rat's cage is a container filled with treats. These treats, however, have a bit of a trick. The container is typically completely enclosed, requiring your dumbo rat to chew through the wall of the container to get the the yummies inside. This may sound a bit annoying to you and me, but trust me when I tell you that your rats will love it!

And lastly, the most important items inside your pet rat's cage are, of course, his food tray and water bottle. Without these, you'll likely have a very upset dumbo rat on your hands!
