What Makes Homemade Dog Treats Special?

By Geraldine Dimarco

If you are like most people you like things easy and convenient-and why not? Time is a valuable commodity that you cannot afford to waste. Why is it then that pet owners still refer to homemade fare as better than the pre-packed dog food? Are these homemade dog treats even worth planning? The answer is a resounding yes.

There are numerous home made dog treats available right now. All you need to do is drive through any grocery store and find aisles upon aisles of dry pet kibble in all shapes and sizes. Of course this is not to mean that these commercial products are terrible and you'll be a bad pet owner if you feed these to them. Not at all. However, it is a better plan for you to give them food that you yourself have prepared. Here are some of the reasons why it is so.

1. It will be healthier for the animal. This is, after all, the priority of every loving and responsible master. By creating snacks that are chock full of vitamins and minerals, you are enhancing his over-all performance and appearance. Sneak in these nutritional snacks to supplement his daily meals.

2. You are lowering the chance of your pet to be a victim of pet food recalls. While many commercial feed are good, even beneficial in a sense, there is always still a possibility that some colorings and preservatives may be fatal for some dogs. You reduce this potential risk by plying him with more natural fare.

3. You may have a pet that have specific health issues that need to be addressed nutritionally. Creating custom made diets are critical to his recovery. This is especially true with allergies. You may not know if the commercial pet food contains chemicals that might be bad for the animal. Ask the veterinarian what particular food will help in reviving the dog's health and use the ingredients to make his favorite treats.

4. And finally-homemade is way more delicious! Whatever it is that the labels of these bagged pet food products may say-- I can bet you that your dog thinks that what you make is yummier. Get your creative juices flowing when planning Fido's snacks. Slice up boiled hotdogs, carrot slices, or liver pieces; smother them with cheese to make it more interesting to the canine palate. I can guarantee you that your doggie will develop the habit of sniffing for you wherever he is.

Now, there is talk that making these treats from scratch will be very expensive for the prudent pet owner. Actually, if you plan them right, you can actually save a lot of money in canine food. Think about it-- with a few cups of flour, eggs, and certain ingredients you can make a couple or so batches of biscuits that can last the animal for a few months. Freeze and store them until you have further need of them.

Are you convinced yet? Homemade dog treats may take a little more effort but you will never doubt its value when you see how happy you've made your pet. It's OK, don't take my word for it-try it out for yourself today.
