Tips On How To Start Your Very Own Hog Farm

By Lianne Derocco

These days, many Americans are considering making big changes in their lives and careers. Thousands of Americans are attempting the creation of their own small livestock farms, whether it is just for self sustainability or profit. If you are thinking about starting up your own hog farm, there many things to consider.

Obviously, you will need to have a large amount of land. Typically, homesteaders and small-scale farmers will need at least an acre or two for every sow and her litter. Even if you are simply raising two hogs and not a sow and litter, they will still need an acre of land. It is best, if possible, to raise two hogs together, as typically they don't enjoy being alone.

Right types of pens are to be considered in building proper place for your animals and now there are many sources available for you to choose from. Coverage is very important as this help protect the animals from elements, thus animals like pigs need cool and shady place where they can rest well. Another important point to consider is the accessibility to fresh and clean water at all times.

One important part of your daily care and maintenance is the animal feed. Hogs being an omnivorous animal need a variety of diet so one should keep in mind that healthy mix of food such as proteins, minerals and vegetables are needed for your hogs. Corn is used only in limited amounts because of the fact that this can cause unnatural weight gain but you can also mix this with grains and some soybeans. Pigs do love to nibble on thus growing clover and alfalfa is a good idea if you have pasture.

Hogs produce a decent amount of waste, and you will need to find a way to store and treat this agricultural waste. If you are just raising one or two hogs, it is fairly easy to clean up the waste and dispose of it. However, if you are raising a larger amount of pigs, you will need to contain the waste safely. If treated properly, it can certainly be used as fertilizer for your garden and yard.

Agra Sphere is an ideal product to use if you are after eliminating crusting and excess sludge as this contains special microbes that could help you treat this agricultural waste. When you toss the Agra Sphere to your pit, the process known as biodegrade begins in which a release of helpful bacteria can be observed. An improved nutrient value, reduced crust and sludge and finally, reduced odors and flies are just some of the noticeable outcomes of the process. Simply this product can eliminate waste problems and provide you a good source of fertilizer.
