Learn How To Train Your Dog With Help From These Tips

By Lance Brodsky

It is very important to train your new puppy properly from the get-go. Without proper training, the happiness you felt at first, will quickly turn into a big headache. This article will show you different methods to help get your puppy acclimated to his new surroundings, leaving both you and your new pup, happy for many years.

Train your dog according to the role he or she will play! Dogs that are going to be used for police work - or in search and rescue - are trained using methods that will strengthen the drive they naturally have. Use their favorite toy as a reward! The goal is to have a dog that will work for extended periods of time because he or she knows that they will get play time when the work is done!

To introduce a new animal into a home that already has dogs, you should give that animal their own territory. This could mean initially giving the new cat or dog their own room or taking your old dogs out of the house before bringing the new dog in. Because dogs are very territorial, this tactic gives your new dog more leverage and makes your older dogs more reluctant to get aggressive.

If your dog has a problem with play biting or excitement nipping, try giving him the cold shoulder. Mouthing dogs are only reacting to their excitement, so cutting off attention will give him the signal that this is an inappropriate way to show that he is happy. With consistency across members of the household, excitement mouthing can be a thing of the past.

If your dog is constantly tempted to dig up your garden, it may be your fertilizer. Fertilizers made with manure or blood meal are intriguing to dogs and actually attract them to the area. Try replacing your fertilizer with a plant-based variety. Just be sure that whatever you choose is still safe for your dog.

It is of utmost importance that you portray yourself as a calm and confident leader when you are training your dog. Dogs are pack animals, and they only feel secure and willing to obey and submit when they trust that you are a capable leader of the pack. When your dog looks up to you as the leader, it will be eager to please you and it will obey your commands.

Be as generous with affection as you are with discipline. So many people spend a great deal of time yelling at their dog to stop doing things that they should not be doing and not enough time showing their dog that they love them. Let him know he is loved and he is sure to behave better for you.

The Alpha in the pack always eats first which means you eat before your dog. This allows you to establish your leadership with your animal and by feeding your dog after yourself, you can monitor the time that food is available and control his feeding habits. This behavior is normal for your dog and expected from the leader.

House training a new puppy is a lengthy process that should be handled with consistency. Make sure you take the puppy out on a set schedule, and remember that puppies have tiny bladders, and need out more frequently than adult dogs. Consistency in the early days of training will avoid lots of accidents in the long run.

To make training your dog effective, refrain from attempting to train it when you're mad at it. If you are upset, there is no way you can give fair orders to your dog, because you will let your emotions take over any rational thoughts. Therefore, you should wait until you have calmed down before attempting to train your dog.

As was discussed in the beginning of this article, proper training will help you and your new puppy, live a much happier life. If you understand the right way to train your dog, it will make it easier much later on to correct any mistakes. Apply the helpful advice from this article and your new best friend will love you forever.
