Use Only Reliable Royal Standard Poodle Breeders

By Marissa Velazquez

For hundreds of years, poodles have been used in all kinds of capacities. They are classified as a hunting or gun dog by the Westminster Kennel Club and were originally intended to be a water retriever. They are intelligent and versatile dogs that have been used beyond what they were meant for and were even accepted by the US Army as one of the 32 breeds used as "war dogs". Royal standard poodle breeders try to maintain a standard of dog that has been established for centuries.

As the demand for pure bred dogs increases, their price tag also rises. Commodifying a living creature is nothing new but turning them into a paycheck regardless of their treatment is unforgivable. More often than not, puppy mills are not hygienic and provide animals that are either already sick or prone to illness.

Being kept in substandard conditions will often affect the temperament of an animal. Because the animals are not properly socialized, the parent animals are often not suitable for adoption as pets or rescue animals. Sometimes, after their potential as breeders is fully realized, they are killed outright. The remaining puppies are sold, en masse, to commercial pet store chains. The process of shipping them results in death for many puppies who are already prone to sicknesses such as kennel cough, pneumonia and in the case of many animals, hip dysplasia.

Poodles are quite smart and can be trained to do all things. They excel in obedience competitions and also in dog shows. A competent poodle handler knows that a firm attitude that reflects easy confidence and authority works best. Over compensating with firm discipline does not work as these dogs are quite assertive and do not respond well to punishment but rather, they respond well to confidence and self-assuredness.

Most breeders who are responsible will not sell an animal to someone that they don't feel will provide adequate housing, exercise and love. If they won't accept a sick animal back, it is another indicating factor of a puppy mill. The filthy conditions that some dogs are kept in make them prone to all kinds of maladies that can be avoided simply by keeping to sanitary and healthy conditions.

Poodles have been typecast as a "fancy" show dog and while they are versatile enough to do any number of jobs, they have definitely made an impact in the dog show world. Four "Best in Show" prizes for the Westminster Dog Show and three for the Crufts Dog Show have guaranteed that the breed's impact on the Dog Show circuit can't be overlooked.

Despite their popularity as show dogs and "classy" pets, their origins can't be ignored. Rather than being perceived as girly or feminine dogs, they should be remembered as hunters, retrievers and the dogs of war. The misconception of the clipping styles that portrays the style as "pom poms" should be remembered as a hunter's utilitarian trim.

Consider that when you buy a poodle, you should try to avoid puppy mills at all costs. They are much more prevalent than would be expected and most animals that are sold in pet stores come from deplorable situations. Finding royal standard poodle breeders is simple enough to do and can guarantee that the animal you bring into your home will be happy and healthy.
