English Labradors Are Wonderful Pets

By Lela Perkins

English Labradors were first discovered in Newfoundland back in the sixteenth century, where they helped fishermen. Three hundred years later however, they first arrived at the fishing town of Poole in England. They were then bred in various other parts of the country. They were often used by aristocrats to fetch game during hunting sessions. That's why they were named Labrador Retrievers later on.

The first recorded use of the word Labrador when referring to the dogs, was by the Earl Of Malmesbury during the late eighteen eighties. He was referencing an area to the north of Newfoundland called Labrador. The fishermen there had used the dogs to retrieve fish which had come away from hooks. The dogs were considered to be extremely hard working.

These days English Labradors are among the most well loved breeds of dog. They tend to be sweet natured, warm and friendly. They can also be very clever and always want to please their masters. Loyalty is a common quality among them too. Labs are usually very friendly towards other dogs and have a relaxed temperament which means they are no threat to children. This is why they tend to be popular pets for families.

English Labs are usually trained without too many problems and they liked to be praised. They are fun-loving dogs and enjoy water as well playing ball games. They're also fond of taking it easy in front of the television. They respond to strong leadership, so it's very important that owners let them know who is in charge, then the dogs are no problem.

A Labrador can be kept fit and healthy with up to forty-five minutes of exercise a day. They love to retrieve things so throwing a stick and getting them to fetch it is a good way to keep them active. They have a very healthy appetite for work, so they do not tire easily. Taking them for long walks is good for them too, especially if the owner rides a bike while the dog runs alongside.

The dogs need to be fully trained when they are young. As adults, they can be strong willed, so they need to be taught to heel and wait for their master while they are still puppies. They need to understand that their owner is also their leader. Once they have been this, they will be obedient.

Although they are short haired dogs, Labs do shed hair. They tend not to shed quite as much hair as most other dog breeds though. If you groom them properly and ensure their hygiene is maintained, you can limit the volume of hair they shed. By brushing their hair every week, you will be able to keep the amount of hair they shed to manageable proportions.

Obesity is common among English Labradors and this can result in secondary illnesses such as diabetes. This can sometimes happen when they aren't given enough exercise or are permitted to be lazy. They need regular physical exercise. How they are fed is crucial as well. Over feeding can shorten a dog's life span while ensuring they receive a healthy diet can prolong it. Generally though, these dogs are terrific family pets as well as being very friendly.
