Taking Care Of A Vomiting Dog

By Shari Evans

It is common for dogs to have digestive problems and an upset stomach. This is due to their nature to eat or chew on different treats that they found on the floor, yard or even in garbage. There are some dogs that even drink water from the toilet which has too many bacteria. Digestive illnesses on dogs are oftentimes associated with vomiting which can be painful for them. Looking at their pain is truly disheartening but you need to get close to them in order for you to see what's really happening and help them to recover.

Improving the Dog's Condition

A medication is not advisable on the first instance that your dog had vomited. A pet parent should not panic until their baby dog vomits for many times on the same hour or day. Once this had happened, you would need to take some actions immediately to get their digestion back to normal. The first thing that you have to do is to take the food bowl and withhold food intake for the next 12 to 24 hours. Placing them under a fasting period will reset the abnormal rhythm of their digestion and keep it back on track. Give water to your poor little dog but make sure that they won't bloat themselves with it.

After the fasting, feed the dog with bland food on the first few hours. Provide small amounts of rice, chicken meat and cottage cheese every hour to help the dog's stomach to adapt on the reintroduction of food. You can also provide an antacid that you normally take if you have are suffering from hyper-acidity or upset stomach. It will also calm the dog's stomach and helps keep the acid down. If your dog won't eat or drink, ready a syringe for the water and pour little amounts on the cheek so that he can swallow it.

Comforting your Dog

Keep the dog indoors and let him stay in a cool, comfy and clean bedding. This will prevent him from being exposed to heat and bacteria outside which causes nausea. Do not bathe the dog while he is sick as this can only make the condition worse. Make sure that your pooch remains hydrated and provide an ice cube in case that he doesn't want to drink from the syringe. Some dogs are feeling hot and will search for cold water. Close the lid of the toilet to prevent him from drinking the cold water with bacteria.

Observe your dog and the vomit. This may sound unappealing but knowing what is being thrown up by the body is necessary to tell your dog's condition. If the vomit is yellow, it means that it is stomach bile and dogs vomit it occasionally however this one could be painful and could lead to death if it happened many times and was left untreated. If there is blood or feces on the vomit, this implies and emergency and you have to call the veterinarian immediately to rescue your dog. Even at the dog's hospital or at home, try to always be on your dog's side. Tender loving care is still something that can make everyone even dogs to feel better and safe.
