An Overview Of Australian Labradoodle Breeders In Indiana

By Amanda Baird

The growing popularity of the cross bred dog known as a Labradoodle has resulted in a number of breeders in the U. S. Who are dedicated to expanding the availability of high quality pets of this type. Australian Labradoodle breeders in Indiana are just one example of those breeders who want to expand access to the breed. Here are a few of the reasons why this type of dog is a great choice for many households.

Originally, the dog was not recognized as a breed, but was simply a cross between a Standard Poodle and a Labrador Retriever. The original breeder, in the late 1970s, was Wally Conron, who was responding to a request for a service dog with specific characteristics, non-allergenic and non-shedding. The Royal Guide Dogs in Victoria Australia chose a specific Golden Retriever and Standard Poodle. An active marketing campaign helped to promote the popularity. From that beginning, a carefully monitored and maintained breeding program has been carried out in ensure health and genetic lines.

A Hawaiian woman in need of a guide dog for the blind requested that an animal be found that would not trigger allergic reactions in her husband. After extensive unsuccessful testing, a cross between a Labrador and a Poodle of Standard size was the answer. The additional benefit of the specific guide dog for this couple was the gentleness, intelligence and temperament of the breed. These characteristics enhanced the popularity of Labradoodles.

There are three different recognized sizes for this breed: Standards, Mediums and Miniatures. The height respectively is 23 to 26 inches, 18 to 21 inches and 14 to 17 inches. The weight ranges are 45 to 77 pounds, 40 to 55 pounds and 26 to 55 pounds.

Two different types of coats are found in the Australian Doodles. Both are very soft. The Fleece coat has no similar characteristics in other dogs. It is most nearly like the loops and spirals of Angora goats. The other type of coat is the Wool Curly. It resembles that of a Poodle.

The non-shedding coat is available in many different colors. These include Black, Cream, Chalk, Red, Chocolate, Cafe, Apricot, Gold, Apricot Cream and Silver. Shedding coats are rare in the breed now, regardless of the color.

The personality and trainability of these canines has been a major reason for the popularity of the animal in Indiana and around the United States as a family pet, as well as a guide or service dog. They are sociable, non-aggressive, and very intuitive, and friendly. Even for people who have allergic reactions to animal dander, or who want to avoid shedding animal hair, the Doodles are very suitable. They adapt well to family living and can be happy in an apartment or small living quarters.

Australian Labradoodle breeders in Indiana subscribe to the highest standards of health and genetic quality. They ensure that breeding animals have health certificates. Any tendency toward common ailments is identified and avoided. Care is taken to ensure that a good match between the puppy and prospective owners is made.
